Beginning in May, 1905, the Ladies Home Journal printed a series of four Cole and Johnson songs which "are supposed to illustrate the growth of the forms of negro music from the old days of minstrelsy to the present day." According to the Ladies Home Journal, Lay Away Your Troubles illustrated the old minstrelsy days.
