Bob Cole and Billy Johnson
Part of the score of A Trip to Coontown, In Dahomey, was one of the musical's big hits. A Trip to Coontown was the first full-length musical comedy written, directed, performed, and produced by black artists. Bob Cole wrote the script, which portrayed Jim Flimflammer, a con artist, who tries to scam Silas Green out of a pension. Cole and Johnson toured with the show for several weeks after it closed on Broadway in 1898. A Trip to Coontown returned to Broadway in 1899. Historians have written in depth about the show's performative parody and challenge to the racist assumptions of its audiences.
