Words: Noble Sissle, Music: Eubie Blake
Shuffle Along was one of the most successful musicals in the history of Broadway, sparking three revivals, Shuffle Along 1930, Shuffle Along 1933, and Shuffle Along 1952. The musical catapulted the careers of Florence Mills, Josephine Baker, Caterina Jarboro, Paul Robeson, and Adelaide Hall. The show's number, Love Will Find a Way, was one of the first love songs ever sung in a black production on Broadway. The potential controversy of romantic representations of African Americans caused Noble Sissle, Aubrey Lyles, and Flournoy Miller immense anxiety on opening night. As Noble Sissle describes, they were ready to flee an angry crowd: "Miller, Lyles, and I were standing near the exit door with one foot north toward Harlem."
