Beinecke Top Tens: American Children's Literature

Collection consists of manuscripts (correspondence and drafts of writings), illustration material (drawings in all media, photographs, book dummies, and printing blocks and plates), and publication proofs by various authors and artists including Louisa May Alcott, Alexander Anderson, Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel, Gelett Burgess, Harrison Cady, Palmer Cox, F. O. C. Darley, W. W. Denslow, Jo Mora, Peter Newell, and Symeon Shimin, as well as work produced for the McLoughlin Brothers publishing house. Also present are penmanship exercise books, samplers, and other school work produced by American children including John Hancock and his brother Ebenezer, letters of advice written to children by prominent figures such as Samuel Clemens, Charles Dodgson, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington, and writings created by and for Native American children.

The collection is comprised of a blank dummy book containing 52 pencil drawings by Bemelmans, most with typescript text, for his book Madeline and the Bad Hat (Viking Press, 1956), accompanied by two drawings of children, in ink, watercolor, graphite, and tempera, both signed by the artist.

The collection documents Miriam Schlein's career as a children's author and her process of researching and writing books on natural history and related topics.

Includes typescript and holograph manuscripts of Gate's collections of stories and poems for children, including "Punch & Robinetta", "The Fortunate Days", and "Tales from the Enchanted Isles", among others. Other writings include the essay collection "The Harvest of the Years" and individual short stories, poems, novels, and plays, including two acts completing Sir James M. Barrie's unfinished play, "Shall We Join the Ladies?". Also in the collection are actors' annotated copies of many of the plays, a letter from Joan Luxton, a personal reflection concerning Gate's father, and manuscript copies of four nineteenth century songs.
