New Haven Register | Robert Stern: Yale's Beloved Beinecke Library Wasn't Always So
The New Haven Register reported on an architectural history of the Beinecke Library presented by Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the Yale School of Architecture, leading architect, and author.
"Since opening 50 years ago, the Beinecke has been studied and reviled and admired," said Stern. "It has survived its critics and is a beloved monument that virtually every visitor to Yale wants to see."
Students, particularly, thought it didn't fit in with the more traditional architecture nearby. Within a decade, the Beinecke had won over most observers. It now functions as a frequent backdrop for protests and celebrations alike.
"Its elegance and refinement have never been duplicated," Stern said.
