Neith Boyce and Hutchins Hapgood
in Enemies
Provincetown Playhouse
1916
Hapgood Family Papers
Co-authored by Neith Boyce and her husband, Hutchins Hapgood, Enemies
was among the plays produced by the Provincetown Players in their first
season in New York. The play explores a modern, nontraditional,
non-monogamous marriage and anticipates some of the concerns that twentieth-century
feminists would continue to raise about the institution of marriage.
A biting satire, Enemies was based in part on a conversation
between the couple and in early drafts, the characters were named Neith
and Hutchins.
