Mabel Dodge Luhan Papers
This short poem, in Luhan’s hand, demonstrates the fractious relationship
between Luhan and
Dorothy Brett. It also demonstrates Luhan’s tendency to examine
her friends and her relationships in her writing. Elizabeth
Shepley Sergeant speculated that guests of Luhan’s might nervously
wonder if they would appear as characters in her multi-volume memoir,
Intimate Memories. The text reads:

Brett
She lives alone by watching
And by the eyes alone
Attention never latching
They never stay at home
Vicarious endeavor
To sense the spirit’s thrill!
Real life will touch her never
Either for good or ill.
A lacky to any spirit
A chorus to any voice
She makes assent a merit
But truth lies hid in choice. |
