Glenway Wescott and Monroe Wheeler Collection of Marianne Moore
Marianne Moore enjoyed a fame and visibility rarely experienced
by American poets. Her love of baseball and the poems she wrote
about the sport brought her work to the attention of a public beyond
the readers of literary magazines. Her baseball poems, including
Baseball and Writing, were reprinted in newspapers all
over the country. In 1968 Moore was invited by the New York Yankees
to throw out the first pitch of the season. Photos of the baseball
poet commemorated the event in newspapers and popular national
news magazines.
