The institution, the building, and the people of the Beinecke
An Oral History of the Beinecke Library
For the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library’s 50th Anniversary, Bill Beinecke, the son of Beinecke founder, Frederick W. Beinecke; Richard Levin, Yale President Emeritus; Karen Marinuzzi, Acquisitions Assistant; George Miles, Curator of Western Americana; and Christa Sammons, Curator Emerita of German Literature were interviewed about their association with the Library.
Together, their recollections and institutional knowledge of Beinecke Library provide insight into Beinecke’s evolution from its origins to its international acclaim today as an international research library. Their collective memories include many fond and whimsical recollections not only of the people who shaped its mission and culture, but the many objects and materials as well.
The interviews were conducted by Archivist, Molly Wheeler, with assistance from Senior Photographers, David Driscoll, Robert Halloran, and Meredith Miller.
