ORDERING COPIES, PHOTOGRAPHS, SCANS / ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC FILES To assist scholars in their research, the Library offers a wide range of photoduplication services including photocopying, microfilm, digital photography, and audio-visual (AV) materials in its collections . The Library will accept small orders for photocopies of individual unbound manuscripts in good condition. To avoid amaging its materials, however, the Library will not photocopy bound books or manuscripts, whole works, photographs, original art work, or large numbers of manuscripts from a collection, but the Library will consider making microfilm-based reproductions depending upon the condition of the material. The Library can also provide paper copies made from a microfilm (copyflo) or photographic reproductions of bound materials and photographs. A self-service microfilm reader printer is available in the Library's Reference Room. Some materials, however, may be too fragile to be subjected to any duplication process. If no master negative or use copy exists, the price for reproductions will include the cost of making one. The negative or master becomes the property of the Library. All reproductions (of whatever nature) are provided for readers' individual scholarly use. Copies should not be deposited in other library collections without the approval of the appropriate curator. In some cases, the Library may require the return of the copies when the need for their use has ended. Readers must identify and select all material for duplication. Please be aware that the Library can fill large or complex orders only as the demands of serving the Reading Room permit. A $25.00 per hour fee will be added to any request requiring special handling or to any order that requires the staff to spend more than 30 minutes on bibliographic research or 60 minutes preparing the material for duplication. For service to commercial users a separate fee may be applied. Advance payment by check, Visa, or MasterCard is required for all orders. Please make checks payable to the Beinecke Library and include the order number (if one has been assigned) on the check and on all correspondence concerning this request; credit card numbers may be faxed or emailed to the Library. If additional payment is required, a bill will be sent with the shipment. Overseas customers paying by check must send payment in U.S. dollars drawn on a United States bank. The minimum charge for all domestic mail orders is $15.00 ($20.00 for overseas orders) including postage and insurance. All domestic mail is sent fourth class unless otherwise specified. All overseas mail is sent air mail printed matter, unless otherwise specified. Turnaround-time is dependent on the complexity of the order and the format of the reproduction. The Library does not offer rush services but always handles requests in the order in which they are received. Normal turnaround is 2-6 weeks although some formats can be produced in a shorter period. The reproduction or reformatting of AV materials, for example, is dependent on the condition of the original and may take considerably longer than other formats cited above. The Library's sale of a reproduction does not imply an authorization to publish it. It is the reader's responsibility to obtain permission to publish texts and facsimiles from the owners of the copyright . Prices
WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC FILES IN MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS Permission to examine: Permission to examine electronic files in manuscript collections will be granted to qualified scholars upon application. Permission is granted subject to whatever restrictions were placed on the files by donors or depositors. Security of files: The Library will provide access to copies of electronic files in manuscript collections in accordance with federal copyright legislation set forth in Title 17, Chapter 1. Reference copies of files are available on CDs and may be viewed with emulation software (Quick View Plus) at public workstations or on laptops in the Reading Room. Copyright: Permission to examine electronic files or printed copies of files is not an authorization to publish. If the text or image in question is under copyright, permission to publish should be sought from the owners of rights, typically the creator or the heirs to his or her estate. It is not necessary to seek the Library’s permission to publish texts of images (unless the Library is identified as the copyright holder.) The Beinecke Library should, however, be cited as the source. Reproduction & Distribution: In accordance with copyright legislation, Title 17, Chapter 1, electronic files may not be copied or distributed in electronic form outside the Library. To assist scholars in their research, the Library will consider requests for printed copies. |
