9:30-10:15am: The Text Engine and the Artist's Book
Stephen Bury, Head of European and American Collections, British Library, will discuss examples of artists and writers who have employed different strategies for creating texts in their work, including generated text from pre-existing texts and making new text from algorithms; he will consider a mixture of historical and contemporary examples, including Dada, Surrealism, OULIPO, Dan Graham, Kozlowski, Sarah Jacobs, among others.
10:15-11:00am: Material Meets Content: The Encounter of Ideas and Alternative Formats from the Twentieth Century Avant-Garde to Contemporary Book Artists
Marcia Reed, Head of Collection Development, Getty Research Institute, will consider the effect of unusual or emblematic materials on the presentation of text and conceptual designs for books made by artists, featuring major works by Duchamp, Marinetti, Maciunas, and others.

11:15-12:00pm: The Artist's Book as an Armature for Ideas: Historical Research in the Work of Angela Lorenz
Angela Lorenz, acclaimed American book artist, works to incorporate all aspects of the book format as a means of communication. For Lorenz, the book is a structure on which and in which to place information. Lorenz will discuss her creative process, in which she often takes her inspiration from historical research, both in subject and format.

Interactive Working Groups - Mandatory sign-up required. Space is limited. Conference participants who are not attending the afternoon interactive sessions are invited to visit exhibitions at the Yale art galleries and libraries.
Group 1: Stephen Bury, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Room 38
Bury will lead a discussion with participants drawing from his morning lecture and exploring a selection of objects from the library's collections.
Group 2: Marcia Reed, Yale University Art Gallery, Prints and Drawings
Reed will lead a discussion with participants drawing from her morning lecture and exploring a selection of objects from the gallery's collections.
Lorenz with continue her discussion of her use of historical research by showing objects and bookworks while engaging with participants.
Group 4: Elisabeth Fairman, Yale Center for British Art, Study Room
Elisabeth Fairman, the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at the Yale Center for British Art, will examine the process archives of Ken Campbell and Ron King/Circle Press, focusing in particular on the influences of Dada and the Fine Press tradition on their work.
Group 5: Timothy G. Young, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Room 39
Timothy G. Young, Associate Curator of Modern Books and Manuscript, Beinecke Library, will discuss "Language Beyond Language," using artists books from the Beinecke's collection that employ the use of pseudo-, quasi-, and sub-verbal language.
