Nine undergraduate actors, directed by Murray Biggs, Associate
Professor (Adjunct) of English and Theater Studies, and Tim Smith, SY
'05, will stage two short comedies by Henry Fielding, October 6th - 9th at
8:30 p.m. in the Underbrook Room of Saybrook College on the corner of
Elm and York Streets.

The production, sponsored by Beinecke Library, is part of a weekend
conference on Fielding (1707-54), who died 250 years ago on October 8.
Better known today as a novelist, especially for "Tom Jones", Fielding
wrote some 25 plays, and was for about 15 years England's premier
playwright.

Being presented at Yale are the one-act pieces "Eurydice" and "Miss
Lucy in Town".  Although the first re-enacts Orpheus's journey to the
underworld to reclaim his dead wife, it is really a satire on 18th-
century manners, like "Miss Lucy", which describes a young country
wife's accelerated introduction to London society in the 1730s.

The October 8th performance is reserved for members of the Fielding
conference.  Reservations for the others, which are free and open to
the public, may be made with sarah.baxter@yale.edu (tel.860-874-8988).
