The Beinecke makes a legendary papyrus purchase.
The New York-based rare book dealer H. P. Kraus issued a sales catalog of 200 papyri. Beinecke Librarian “Fritz” Liebert selected three items and approached Edwin J. Beinecke to ask if he would purchase them for the library. “Aren’t the rest any good?” E. J. inquired. When Fritz answered that they were, E. J. bought the whole catalog for the library. It included a copy of an oration by Demosthenes, Coptic charms, and--as was recognized later--a fragment from the Nag Hammadi Codex III. See YULG 64:1-2.
