Manuscript legal documents relating to charges of copyright and performance rights violations, brought by Gounod and his librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré against London theater managers, including circa 35 documents, 1863-1867 and undated, concerning James Henry Mapleson and performance of Faust at Her Majesty's Theatre; and circa 25 documents, 1867-1869 and undated, concerning Frederick Gye and performance of Roméo et Juliette at the Royal Opera House. Documents include lawyers' notes, drafts, and accounts; documents such as pleas, motions, interrogatories, and affidavits; other documents issued by the Court of Queen's Bench; and a few autograph manuscript notes by Gounod and autograph letters, signed, from music publisher Antoine Choudens. Also present are an autograph letter, signed, from Gye to “Mademoiselle Wagner,” 1852, about performance of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Le prophète; and a manuscript contract, 1855, concerning Cramer, Beale & Co., Gye, and singers Giulia Grisi and Giovanni Mario.
