Description: Autograph manuscript of the novel The Land of the Fire, undated, in the hand of an amanuensis. Corrections are in the hand of Mayne Reid. Bound with accompanying autograph manuscript of suggestions, by Reid, of how to illustrate the work; a receipt from the Century Company for publication rights, dated 1883 November 8, signed by Elizabeth Reid; an autograph manuscript synopsis of the work in the hand of a publisher's reader; and a printed version of the work's first installment in St. Nicholas Magazine. Also accompanying the volume is an undated typescript entiteld "Excursion by Sir William Hamilton from the Island of Iscia, to the neighboring island of St. Stephano and which is very near to the Island of Ventatiene and to which this excursion extended, R. F. G."

Description: Contains 127 typescript letters, signed, from various government and state officials addressed directly to the Council of National Defense Section on Cooperation between the States or referred to it by other departments, dealing entirely with routine business of state organizations undertaken in connection with the Council's work. The letters are dated 1917 March to August. Included among the correspondents are Ida M. Tarbell, Herbert Hoover, Robert Lansing, Newton D. Baker, J. M. Daniels, and Walter Lippmann.

John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield collection,

English literature 18th century.
Author: Sheffield, John Holroyd, Earl of, 1735-1821.
Description: Contains original manuscripts, transcripts, and notes used by John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield for his edition of The Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon, published in two volumes in 1796. The manuscripts are described in a typewritten catalog filed with the collection. The collection also includes papers originally in the possession of Dorothea (Patton) Gibbon and turned over by her to Lord Sheffield, Edward Gibbon's executor and editor. The collection regards the personal lives of the Gibbon and Patton families and includes drafts of letters from Dorothea Gibbon to her stepson, a historian. A description of the papers, created by the firm of Birrell and Garnett, is filed with them.
