Description: Circa 90 autograph letters, signed, to Gretchen Warren from Kanʼichi Asakawa, with circa 50 typed transcriptions of letters to Asakawa from other friends and colleagues, sent by Asakawa to Warren, 1935-1948 and undated; and a copy of one letter, typescript carbon, from Warren to Asakawa, undated. Letters concern their friendship, Japanese and German culture and politics, American-Japanese relations and Asakawa's advocacy of peace, and events of World War II. Some letters from Asakawa are annotated by Warren or accompanied by typed transcripts. Related papers consist of an undated compilation of typed transcripts, “Letters of K. Asakawa to Gretchen Osgood Warren and Other Friends, 1935-1947”; a reprint of an article by Asakawa, “Some Aspects of Japanese Feudal Institutions” (Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan, volume XLVI, part I, 1918); and a small amount of other correspondence and notes of Warren.
