Manuscript field journal that documents the military career of Bennett A. Clements, July 27, 1859, to January 4, 1886. The volume principally discusses the daily activities of Clements and the United States Army troops commanded by Colonel Edward Richard Sprigg Canby in the Utah and New Mexico Territories from 1860 to 1862 . Activities included protecting settlers against aggressive American Indians and negotiations with Navajo Indians, Ute Indians, and Zuni Indians, as well as skirmishes with Confederate States Army troops. Later journal entries include details of Clements' subsequent service with the Army of the Potomac and at hospitals in New York City, as well as a medical doctor with United States Army troops commanded by General George Crook in the Dakota Territory in 1876. The journal also documents events and trips taken by his immediate family.
