Armstrong and Irvine describe their social and religious life in Santa Rita, California (also called Sotoville), including their friends, businessman David Jack, his wife Maria Soledad de Romie Jack, C. C. Stratton, minister and president of the University of the Pacific, and Romulo F. M. Soto, attorney and son of city founder J. M. Soto. Irvine and Armstrong also discuss the Irvine family store and the presidential election of 1880, including the political views of their family and friends.
