16 autograph letters, signed, 12 from Geneva A. Hartwell to an unidentified cousin named Addie, 2 from an unidentified cousin named Florence, and 2 from Hartwell's brother Orville E. Hartwell. Hartwell describes life as a non-Mormon woman in a Mormon community in Salt Lake City, including social customs, plural marriage, her opinions of prominent Mormons Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and her experiences being socially ostracized in her community. Hartwell also describes the reaction to the Poland Act of 1874, which attempted to prosecute polygamy in Utah by eliminating Mormon control over court cases under the jurisdiction of the Utah Territory. Orville E. Hartwell describes an incident when a Mormon attempted to baptize Geneva Hartwell against her will.
