Description: Autograph manuscript of sixteen instructive and autobiographical letters by Nicholas Ray, writing from London and addressing his young nephew Richard Ray in New York. In his letters Ray recounts his arrival at St. Eustatius on November 3, 1739, his experiences in the West Indies trade, and his travels through Europe and England before he settled in London. Ray also transcribes letters he published in London newspapers under the signatures of “Americus” and “Britanicus.”
