Beinecke Collections
Born in 1920, Barbara Guest is associated with the group of poets known as the first generation of the New York school of poetry, including Frank O'Hara, John Ashbery, and James Schuyler. This group, active in the 1950’s, was heavily influenced by abstract expressionist and surrealist art. She continued to write innovative poetry and prose throughout the late twentieth century until her death in February of 2006.

The E. L. McGlashan Collection of Documents Concerning Slavery in the United States consists of manuscript bills of sale, receipts, estate appraisals, deeds of gift, manumission statements, promissory notes, and other papers documenting slave ownership and the slave trade in the United States between 1770 and 1863. The bulk of the material documents slavery in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky and Alabama.

The Yale Collection of American Literature has acquired the archive of poet and novelist Gustaf Sobin (1935-2005), an American who lived most of his adult life in Provence. Sobin was the author some 27 books, including primarily books of poetry and novels (some translated into several languages), but also collections of essays, children’s books, and works of translation.

Claude McKay (1890-1948), one of the major figures of the Harlem Renaissance, wrote several collections of poetry, novels, short stories, non-fiction, and autobiographical books. He lived in the United States, primarily in New York, from 1913-1919, and then spent most of the next 15 years in England, Russia, France, Spain, and Morocco before returning to New York in 1934.
