At commencement on May 26, 2008, Yale President Richard C. Levin awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree to poet and Bollingen Prize winner John Ashbery. Of Ashbery's contributions to the art of American poetry, Levin said:

The Beinecke Library is pleased to announce its new staffed reference desk. Researchers and students are welcome to visit the desk to consult with Beinecke staff about the library’s collections. Librarians will be available at the reference desk Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3-5 p.m. Additional hours will be added in the coming weeks. The temporary reading room is located in Yale's Sterling Memorial Library, across Wall Street from the Beinecke.
