STANLEY KUBRICK
2001
A perfect, alien black monolith is found on the moon.
As the sunlight strikes the monolith, it emits a radio burst toward
Jupiter. The Discovery – with
a science crew, two pilots and an intelligent computer, Hal – is
sent to the gas giant. En route Hal goes haywire, and kills all but one
of the crew – Dave Bowman. Bowman finds a second, much larger monolith
at Saturn, enters it, and is transported to another part of the universe.
In this utopian dream of space travel, Dave goes alone, rejecting governmental
support and technological help and becomes a distinctly American hero,
the rugged individualist. He finds a space frontier untouched by man.
