Manuscript diary in the hand of A. Decker describing his journey from Ashley Falls, Massachusetts to Pinos Altos, New Mexico, and his life as a gold miner in Pinos Altos. Decker describes his mining claims, mining supplies, and his success selling small quantities of gold. Decker details life in Pinos Altos, including economic conditions, nearby Fort Bayard, and trials and punishments for crimes such as murder and theft. Decker also describes several conflicts between white settlers and unidentified Indians (possibly Navajo or Apache), including Decker joining a group of men who pursued Indian horse thieves over 270 miles in June 1867, leading to the group killing 11 Indians.
