Event description:

In commemoration of Albertus Magnus College’s centennial year, Beinecke presents a drop-in open house display of collection materials related to the history of the College and to its namesake, St. Albert the Great. Materials will include editions of works by and about St. Albert the Great, photographs and documents related to Albertus’ 100-year history, and materials documenting some of the Prospect Hill homes that were acquired and repurposed by the school.

Albertus Magnus College opened in the fall of 1925 after the Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of the Springs (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace) purchased a New Haven estate for the purposes of establishing a Catholic, residential, liberal arts college for women. Today, the school serves around 1,300 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. The school’s namesake, St. Albert the Great or St. Albertus Magnus (c. 1200-1280), was a German Dominican bishop, scientist, and philosopher. A prolific writer on a wide variety of subjects, he is particularly known for his commentary on the work of Aristotle.

Kindly note: all visitors to this special display will need to check any and all bags, coats, and other personal belongings in secure lockers on the library’s ground floor before going to the reading room.
