The Yale Collection of American Literature has acquired the archives of poet and novelist Gustaf Sobin (1935-2005), an American who lived most of his adult life in Provence.

Sobin was the author some 27 books — primarily books of poetry and novels (some translated into several languages), as well as collections of essays, children’s books, and works of translation.

The archive includes drafts, notebooks, manuscripts, correspondence, translation notes, research notes, and unpublished work. Key correspondents include Rene Char, Tina Jolas, James Laughlin, Eliot Weinberger, Clayton Eshleman, Charles Tomlinson, Nathaniel Mackey, Rachel DuPlessis, John Berger, Michael Palmer, Pierre Joris, Paul Hoover, and Dominique Fourcade.

The archive also includes books and other printed materials that served as source or research material for eight of Sobin’s books; much of this material is heavily annotated by Sobin.
