A recent post at Smithsonian.com discusses notebooks Langston Hughes kept during his 1927 road trip with Zora Neale Hurston – the notebooks are found in the Langston Hughes Papers at the Beinecke Library (JWJ MSS 26).

The notebooks have been digitized in their entirety and can be seen online here: Langston Hughes 1927 “Trip South” Notebooks. The Smithsonian.com post included a transcription of a previously unpublished work by Hughes related to his 1927 notebooks: Langston Hughes Examines the Harsh Life on the Chain Gang.

The article also includes a photograph from the Hughes papers, featuring Hughes, Hurston, and Jessie Fauset at Tuskegee University.
