NEW Acquisition: H.D.’s Needlework

April 13, 2018

By Nancy Kuhl

The Yale Collection of American Literature is pleased to announce an addition to the H. D, Papers: the Schaffner Family Foundation has donated a collection of needleworks created by H. D. The collection includes two finished and two unfinished needlepoint canvases made by H.D., likely during the Blitz, and possibly completed at a later date. Also included are sewing notions and wool yarn fragments for various needlepoint projects. Some tapestries are made from commercially printed patterns.

The materials will be open for research in the coming months (pleasse contact the curator for more information: nancy.kuhl@yale.edu).

The collection is the subject of recent scholarship by Amy Elkins: “A Stitch in Time: H.D.’s Craft Modernism as Transhistoric Repair.”
