Literary scholar and bibliographer David J. Supino has donated his extraordinary collection of works by Henry James to the Yale Collection of American Literature. Including nearly a thousand volumes, the David J. Supino Collection of Works by Henry James is the subject of Mr. Supino’s outstanding scholarly work: Henry James: A Bibliographical Catalogue of a Collection of Editions to 1921, Second Edition Revised, Oxford UP, 2014.

The David J. Supino Collection of Works by Henry James includes examples of all of Henry James’s works—including editions, impressions, and states—published in English to 1921. British and American editions are complemented by colonial and European issues of Henry James titles; Supino’s remarkably complete collection includes well-known standard editions alongside numerous rare and unusual variant editions. Additionally, the collection includes related printed ephemera, publishers’ advertisements, examples of early and uncommon dust jackets, and collection-specific additions such as booksellers’ slips, binders’ tickets, and bookplates.

Mr. Supino is a renowned book collector and a highly esteemed member of the Grolier Club. He began his career as a book collector by pursuing works of 18th-century poetry and books by Dickens, Thackeray, and Trollope; he turned his attention to the works of Henry James in the 1980s and began work on Henry James: A Bibliographical Catalogue in the 1990s.

A brief record for the David J. Supino Collection of Works by Henry James can be found in Orbis, the Yale Library catalog: David J. Supino Collection of Works by Henry James (Call Number: ACC 58283).
