Roger Wieck, Curator of Medieval Manuscripts at the Morgan Library in New York City, led a full-day workshop on medieval calendars at the Beinecke Library on April 4, 2014.  Students learned how medieval people used calendars to calculate various feasts, such as Easter, and how to determine what region or use each calendar was created for.  Mr. Wieck used several manuscripts from the Beinecke’s collections in the morning session, then used two folios of his own to challenge students to determine what use the calendar was created for using only the two folios, representing four months.  Students (with expert guidance) successfully determined that the calendar was for the use of Beauvais based on several unique feast days reserved for local saints.  This was the second in a series entitled Beinecke Workshops in the Archival Sciences.  The next workshop will be April 25 on Notarial Sources lead by Ben Yousey-Hindes, Yale University, and Jeff Miner, Western Kentucky University.
