This talk is in conjunction with the new student research exhibit, “City Rewritten: The Oak Street Connector and Urban Renewal in New Haven,” curated by Simone Herko Felton ‘24 in the Sterling Memorial Library Exhibition Corridor, 120 High Street.

“City Rewritten: The Oak Street Connector and Urban Renewal in New Haven” explores the effects of the formative era of urban renewal on New Haven’s urban landscape and social history. Urban renewal was a progressive vision aimed at revitalizing a city’s economy, beautifying the urban landscape, removing residents from substandard living conditions, and promoting racial integration. However, historians and urban planners have largely viewed the policy as a failure, one that disproportionately displaced impoverished Black people and reinforced patterns of segregation.

Felton is a junior in Davenport College from San Francisco, CA. She majors in history and enjoys exploring topics ranging from urban history and modern nationalism to the Abrahamic religions. Simone hopes to pursue a career as a museum curator.

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and question and answer beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm.
