This Mondays at Beinecke online program will provide an introduction to the library’s holdings in U.S. diplomacy and focus on one of the most recent acquisitions, the Donald Lyman Papers. These papers contain diary entries, memos, calendars, and other papers created by, or related to, Donald Lyman. Materials also include a sixty-five page diary documenting Lyman’s work in Mexico as Special Assistant to U. S. Ambassador John Gavin and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission from 1981-1984.

Joshua Cochran is Curator of American History and Diplomacy in the Beinecke Library.

Donald Lyman studied in History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergraduate and graduate studies, ultimately receiving his PhD in Diplomatic History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1976. Lyman worked in the Foreign Service from January 1977 to July 1984 before entering the private sector. He worked for multiple corporations including the Latin American Division, IBM (1984-1999), Ingram Micro (1999-2000) and Sensormatic/Tyco (2001-2009). Since 2009, Lyman has been President of Peregrine Security Inc.

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and question and answer beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm.
