Biography

Walid A. Saleh (Ph.D. Yale, 2001) is Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Toronto. He is a specialist on the Qur’an and the history of its interpretation (tafsir). His first book The Formation of the Classical Tafsir Tradition (Brill, 2004) was based on his dissertation. His second book, In Defense of the Bible (Brill, 2008) was a critical edition and a study of a medieval Islamic polemical treatise on the Bible. At Beinecke, Saleh will study a Qur’an commentary by al-Wahidi (d. 1076). Al-Wahidi was a medieval Qur’an commentator and a literary critic whose significance has only recently been recognized. Beinecke copy, the second volume of a set that is now lost, will help shed light on the history of the transmission of the text. This study is part of a monograph on al-Wahidi and his Qur’an commentary.
