Biography

Christopher Brooks is Professor of History at Durham University.  A native of Maryland, he received his BA degree from Princeton University and his D Phil from Oxford University.  His general interests are in the social and legal history of England from the end of the middle ages to the mid nineteenth century.  His most recent major publication is Law, Politics and Society in Early Modern England (Cambridge University Press, 2008).  In 2010 he began a three-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship in order to research and write the volume covering the years 1625-1689 for the Oxford History of the Laws of England.  While in New Haven, he  will be exploring the Beinecke’s extensive collections of seventeenth-century legal and political papers in connection with this project.
