An introduction to the Yale Film Archive and discussion of its Art & Protest screenings this semester presented with the Beinecke Library in conjunction with the exhibition Art, Protest, & the Archives.

The Yale Film Archive’s mission is to advance film culture and support teaching, learning, and research at Yale through collection, preservation, access, and exhibition. Part of Yale University Library, the YFA pursues its mission by building and maintaining a collection of media in a variety of film and video formats; providing on-site viewing facilities; supporting classroom showings and individual research; performing film conservation and preservation work; and presenting screenings and related events to the Yale community and the public.

This semester’s screenings include “The Battle of Algiers” (screened on October 5), “Medium Cool” (on November 2), and “Do the Right Thing” (on November 30).

This Mondays at Beinecke will feature film archivist Brian Meacham. He oversees acquisition, inspection, cataloging, and preservation of the Archive’s collection , which includes print and pre-print elements acquired by the university over the last 50 years. He has overseen the preservation of a number of films in the collection with the help of preservation grants from the National Film Preservation Foundation, and helped launch and program the ongoing 35mm screening series, “Treasures from the Yale Film Archive.”

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and question and answer beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm.
