Event description:

What is “America”? What does it look like? Where can it be found? What does “America” mean and for whom? Join us on the Mezzanine at the Beinecke on April 17 at 4:00 pm for a panel that celebrates the publication of MAGNUM AMERICA/USA, an ambitious new book that juxtaposes historical commentary with eight decades of vivid photographs in the archive of the renowned Magnum Photography collective, founded in the wake of World War II, to offer potential answers to those questions. MAGNUM AMERICA/USA presents a landmark visual portrait of the nation, past and present, as it stands once again at a crossroads of history.

Panel participants include photojournalist Peter Van Agtmael, (YC 2003), a member of Magnum, Yale photo historian Professor Laura Wexler, who co-edited the book, and Yolanda Cuomo, its designer. Others include Professor and poet Charlie Samuya Veric, (PhD, Yale, 2011) of Ateneo de Manila University, Professor and filmmaker Alexandra Juhasz, of Brooklyn College, and historian Professor Matthew Jacobson, of Yale, all of whom wrote for the book. Yale Professor of Comparative Literature, Jesus Velasco, will Chair and moderate a Q&A to follow.

This event is proudly co-sponsored by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and The Photographic Memory Workshop at Yale.
